Getting a Grip on Data
Weâre drowning in information and starving for knowledge.
âRutherford D. Rogers (as cited in Blaydes, 1998, p. 35)
Data here; data there; data, data everywhere! According to Marzano (2003), the current era of school reform is characterized by heavy doses of data. In fact, school systems are expected to collect nine times as much information as other major corporations (Anderson, 2004). Daunting requirements for a system whose primary mission is teaching and learningânot data compilation and analysisâmake it hard for educators to keep their heads above water.
Without question, the use of data sets the stage for cogent discussions and ultimately leads to meaningful outcomes. This is good for schools and good for children. So what seems to be the problem? With a mother lode of data waiting to be mined, educators are struggling to hit the right vein. If making data-based decisions is a defining characteristic of school improvement, then leaders have to know how to collect, organize, analyze, and use data. Without a firm grip on data selection and examination, the requirements to generate reports and information about students shall take precedence over educating them.
